How to use the result
A practical planning estimate
Carton dimensions affect more than freight volume. They determine pallet patterns, loaded height, weight, warehouse handling, and how much air moves through the supply chain. This calculator checks six regular orientations and selects the highest carton count within the entered height and weight limits.
Use the finished outside carton dimensions and gross packed weight from the supplier.
Enter the pallet footprint and limits required by the warehouse, carrier, or customer.
Validate the suggested pattern for compression, stability, overhang, handling, and container geometry.
Carton CBM and pallet capacity
Carton CBM = length(cm) × width(cm) × height(cm) ÷ 1,000,000 · Pallet cartons = min(regular-grid capacity, weight capacity)
The tool calculates cartons per layer with a single orientation, then applies the available stack height and weight limit. A warehouse or packaging engineer may find a better mixed pattern or require fewer layers for safe stacking.
Frequently asked questions
Does CBM equal chargeable freight volume?
Not always. Carriers can apply minimums, density rules, dimensional weight, pallet dimensions, stackability factors, and route-specific pricing. Use CBM as one planning input.
Why is the container percentage only approximate?
A container's nominal internal volume cannot be filled perfectly. Pallets, door clearance, load sequencing, carton geometry, weight distribution, and bracing reduce practical utilization.
Can cartons be placed on their side?
The calculator tests all six rectangular orientations. Only use an orientation permitted by the product, closure, print, liquid handling, compression, and warehouse requirements.
