How to Define Your Packaging Requirements
Before contacting any supplier, document your packaging requirements in detail. This prevents wasted time on quotes that don't match your needs and ensures you can compare suppliers on equal terms.
Key specifications to define:
- Product dimensions and weight — measure your actual product, not just the box it currently ships in.
- Protection requirements — how fragile is your product? Does it need cushioning, suspension, or structural rigidity?
- Material preferences — corrugated, rigid board, compostable, recycled content, or no preference.
- Print requirements — number of colors, interior printing, finishes (matte, gloss, spot UV, foil).
- Volume forecast — monthly and annual quantities, including seasonal peaks.
- Budget range — per-unit target and total project budget.
- Timeline — when do you need the first delivery?
Having a written spec sheet makes you a better buyer. Suppliers respond faster, provide more accurate quotes, and take you more seriously when you demonstrate that you've done your homework.
