A dieline is the flat blueprint for a package. It shows where the material will be cut, folded, glued, scored, perforated, and printed. For ecommerce brands, understanding dielines prevents some of the most expensive packaging mistakes: artwork on fold lines, logos cut off at edges, panels upside down, and designs that look great flat but awkward once folded.
Core Dieline Terms
- Cut line: The final edge where the material will be cut.
- Fold or score line: The crease where the box folds.
- Bleed: Artwork that extends beyond the cut line so there is no white edge after trimming.
- Safety zone: The area inside the cut and fold lines where important text and logos should stay.
- Glue flap: A panel that gets adhesive and should usually remain free of important artwork.
- Knockout or window: A cutout area, sometimes covered with film.
Who Creates the Dieline?
Usually the supplier or structural designer creates the technical dieline after you provide product dimensions and box style. Your graphic designer then places artwork onto that dieline. If you are using a packaging design agency, they may own both the structure and the graphics. If you are using an online packaging platform, the platform may generate a downloadable dieline template.
Artwork Setup Rules
- Use vector artwork for logos, icons, and text whenever possible.
- Set print files in CMYK unless the supplier requests Pantone spot colors.
- Extend background colors and images at least 3mm beyond cut lines.
- Keep critical text and logos at least 5mm inside cut and fold lines.
- Convert fonts to outlines before final handoff.
- Place dieline lines on a separate locked layer.
- Clearly mark non-printing lines so they do not appear on the final package.
Common Dieline Mistakes
- Panel orientation errors: A side panel may look upside down on the flat dieline but be correct once folded. Always review a 3D mockup.
- Artwork across fold lines: Thin text or faces across creases can distort after folding.
- No bleed: Small cutting movement creates visible white edges.
- Ignoring board thickness: Thick corrugated or rigid board changes how panels align in the final structure.
- Overdesigning glue areas: Ink and coatings can interfere with adhesive if the supplier does not account for them.
Approval Checklist
- Confirm internal dimensions with the actual product, not just CAD dimensions.
- Review a folded mockup or 3D rendering.
- Check that barcodes, QR codes, and small type are scannable and readable.
- Verify Pantone or CMYK color values.
- Confirm finish areas such as foil or spot UV on separate layers.
- Ask the supplier to preflight the final file before production.
If dielines feel unfamiliar, pay for one extra proofing round. It is far less costly than discovering after production that the front panel is actually the bottom flap.
