Alibaba vs. Direct Factory: How to Find Suppliers
Most brands start their China sourcing journey on Alibaba — but not all Alibaba suppliers are equal. Understanding the landscape prevents costly mistakes.
Types of Alibaba suppliers:
- Factories (manufacturers) — they own production equipment and make the packaging themselves. Lower prices, more control, but higher MOQs and less flexibility.
- Trading companies — they source from multiple factories and resell. Higher prices (10–30% markup), but lower MOQs, broader product range, and often better English communication.
- Factory-traders — factories with a trading arm that also source products they don't manufacture. Common and can be a good middle ground.
How to identify factories vs. traders:
- Check the Alibaba supplier profile for "Manufacturer" vs "Trading Company" designation.
- Request factory photos and video tours — real factories will provide these readily.
- Ask for the business license (营业执照) — it shows the registered business scope.
- Request a visit or third-party audit — traders will deflect, factories will accommodate.
- Ask about production capacity and lead times — vague answers suggest a trader.
Beyond Alibaba: Consider Made-in-China.com, Global Sources, and attending Canton Fair (China Import and Export Fair) for packaging-specific sourcing. Industry-specific trade shows often yield better factory relationships than general marketplaces.
