FSC-certified packaging is packaging made with paper or fiber that follows Forest Stewardship Council standards. For ecommerce brands, FSC is one of the clearest and most recognized ways to support responsible forest sourcing. But FSC claims only mean something when the supplier has the right chain-of-custody documentation and the claim matches the material you are actually buying.
What FSC Certification Covers
FSC is focused on forest-based materials such as paper, corrugated board, molded pulp, labels, inserts, tissue, and paper tape. It does not automatically make packaging recyclable, compostable, carbon neutral, or plastic-free. It verifies that the fiber comes from responsible sources and is tracked through the supply chain.
Common FSC Claim Types
- FSC 100%: All fiber comes from FSC-certified forests.
- FSC Mix: Fiber comes from a mix of FSC-certified material, recycled material, and controlled wood.
- FSC Recycled: The product is made from reclaimed material.
FSC Mix is common in corrugated packaging because mills blend multiple fiber sources. It can still be a credible claim when documentation is clear.
Chain of Custody Matters
The supplier selling you FSC packaging must have FSC chain-of-custody certification, or they must source from a certified converter and provide correct documentation. If the paper mill is certified but the converter is not, the final box may not be eligible to carry an FSC claim.
What to Ask Suppliers
- What is your FSC certificate code?
- Is the specific material quoted FSC 100%, Mix, or Recycled?
- Will the FSC claim appear on the invoice?
- Can the FSC logo be used on the package?
- Who approves the FSC label artwork?
- Does the certification cover the facility producing our packaging?
Using the FSC Logo
You cannot copy and place an FSC logo on your box without approval. FSC label use must follow brand rules and usually requires approval through a certified supplier or license holder. The label must match the claim type, and the supplier should guide the approval process.
FSC vs. Recycled Content
FSC and recycled content are related but different. FSC focuses on responsible sourcing and chain of custody. Recycled content focuses on material reuse. A package can be FSC-certified, recycled, both, or neither. For many ecommerce brands, the strongest position is recycled-content corrugated with FSC documentation for any virgin fiber.
When FSC Is Worth Prioritizing
- Your customers care about sustainability claims.
- You sell into retail or wholesale channels with packaging requirements.
- You use a lot of paper-based packaging.
- Your brand wants specific, verifiable claims instead of vague eco language.
- You need supplier documentation for compliance or marketplace reporting.
FSC is not a complete sustainability strategy, but it is a strong foundation. Pair it with right-sized packaging, recycled content, clear disposal instructions, and honest claims.
